Floyd Mayweather was a controversial figure during his two-year reign at the Mayweather Promotions and it’s safe to say there was a lot of hate directed at him during that time.
It’s been well documented that Mayweather had a volatile relationship with his manager over his alleged infidelity with the late Marlon Brando, and that feud ended with Brando’s death.
That led to the creation of the Floyd Mayweather Foundation to help raise awareness for brain injury and the causes of death in boxing.
The foundation was created as a way to try and help other sportspeople and fighters through these issues.
It was during that period of time that Mayweather took on the role of president of the Mayweather Boxing Alliance and made the decision to take a hiatus from boxing for several months to take on a new challenge: a new kind of sport: Ultimate Fighting Championship.
That’s what Mayweather did during the time he was away from boxing.
On July 1, 2016, he debuted the UFC in Las Vegas as the first MMA promotion outside of the United States.
In 2016, Mayweather was named the winner of the UFC’s Light Heavyweight Championship.
This is what the UFC had to say about his time in Las, Vegas: Floyd Mayweather’s UFC career started when he joined the organization in 2011 as a junior middleweight and went on to fight for the welterweight title for the first time in 2013.
He went on a two-fight winning streak, including a stoppage of Travis Browne in a title fight at UFC 168 that helped give rise to the UFC light heavyweight division.
Then came his loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in July of 2016, which left him with a broken jaw and multiple concussions.
After a short layoff, Mayweather returned to training and competed at the UFC 209 event in August of 2017, where he defeated Donald Cerrone by first-round knockout in the main event.
The following month, Mayweather fought Nate Diaz again at UFC 210 in Detroit, Michigan.
“It was a great win for me.
It was a big win for my career,” Mayweather said in a statement.
“It was definitely one of the best fights I’ve ever had, and I’ve been on a really good run with the fights that I’ve had.”
This was the first fight Mayweather had since his UFC 210 loss.
He was supposed to fight Jose Aldo again in late December, but Aldo pulled out due to a concussion, which Mayweather then missed the fight.
Mayweather returned in early February 2018, defeating Glover Teixeira by unanimous decision.
He lost his last fight in March of 2018, when he was knocked out by Alexander Gustafsson in the second round of their bout.
There were rumors of a rematch between Mayweather and Aldo, but it never happened.
At the end of the month, the UFC suspended Mayweather for a full year.
That led to his departure from the promotion.
During that time, the world of mixed martial arts was on the brink of its first MMA superstar, with the likes of Daniel Cormier, Jose Aldon, and Conor McGregor all making their mark.
“There was always that tension and tension and frustration of, ‘Man, I wish I could fight Conor, I feel like I’m not doing enough,'” said Conor McGregor, a UFC featherweight champion.
“He’s one of my favorite guys in the world, but there’s a lot more than that that I love about him.”
McGregor said that he’d like to see Mayweather return to the sport, and he’s hoping he does.
“I’ve been wanting to see Floyd back in the UFC, I think it’s something that I can be a part of and something that makes a big impact in the sport,” McGregor said.
“The sport’s changed.
People are watching it.
The fans are watching.
They’re loving it.
People want to see the sport go in a different direction, but they can’t get there by themselves.”
With all of the drama and controversy surrounding Floyd Mayweather, you might think he’s been a bit of a lost cause.
He did end up winning his first two fights, but he never looked back.
According to the Floyd M. Mayweather Foundation, the organization has raised more than $8.3 million since it was created.
