The American Conservatives is reporting that President Donald Trump has signed an anti-transgender bill into law that will effectively ban transgender people from using restrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate.
According to the American Conservative, the bill, which is scheduled to be signed into law by Trump on Wednesday, bans gender-specific restrooms in public places including public schools and places of worship.
The bill states that restrooms must be “separate from other areas of the building or facilities” and that “no person shall be denied the use of a restroom or other restroom facility solely because of the sex that is on the person’s birth certificate.”
The bill also prohibits transgender people to use public bathrooms in accordance with their gender identity.
The legislation was introduced in Congress by Democrat Tim Walberg, who also introduced legislation that would allow businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples.
Trump, who is also a billionaire who owns the golf course in New Jersey that was named after him, had tweeted that he was signing the bill.
He tweeted, “The United States Senate has passed my sweeping bill to protect the rights of LGBTQ Americans and to end discrimination.
I will sign it.
Let’s do it!”
The bill would also allow transgender people in the U.S. to use the bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding to the gender with which they identify.
The American Humanist Association also released a statement condemning the bill’s passage, saying, “It is a travesty that Trump has passed this harmful legislation and now has a new executive order that he can’t enforce.”
Walberg said that the law is a “tough, practical step” that will protect children from bullying.
“This is a real, strong, common sense law that protects all of our kids from bullying and discrimination,” Walberg told The Associated Press.
